The devil's claw is native to South Africa and belongs to the sesame family. It is imported from the Kalahari desert of South Africa or Namibia under the name Harpagophytum Procumbens or African Devil's Claw and should not be confused with our native plant of the same name.
The locals used devil's claw as a bitter tonic for indigestion, blood disorders, as a fever and pain reliever, and for pregnancy complaints and migraines.

Despite many contradictory pharmacological test results, devil's claw extracts could be used successfully, especially in rheumatic diseases. In this way, side effects of synthetic anti-inflammatory drugs can be reduced or saved.
Devil's claw extracts are also used to support the treatment of arthrosis, as they counteract the breakdown of joint cartilage by certain enzymes.
More recent studies, however, show impressively that devil's claw extracts show comparable results in terms of anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects as conventional synthetic anti-inflammatory drugs (inflammation inhibitors) and analgesics.
